A day trip to Abu Dhabi, from Dubai

The two findings that shape everything else

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is not free — or it is. The Centre that runs it publishes AED 10 for visitors from outside the UAE and AED 5 for Emirates ID holders. The emirate’s own tourism department publishes “there is no fee to enter”. Two government bodies, one mosque, opposite statements. Both, with the hours and the dress code quoted verbatim.

No Yas Island theme park publishes a ticket price on its ticket page. Six of the operator’s own pages carry none — only “Save up to AED 245” and “Save up to AED 685”, discounts with nothing published to discount from. The figures are on the FAQ pages instead, and at SeaWorld the other way round. All four parks’ own prices, with the page each sits on, and why the search results are all resellers anyway.

Getting there, and what it costs

The short version: it is roughly ninety minutes each way by road, and nothing you set up in Dubai works when you arrive — nol, Salik and Parkin all stop at the border.

The mistake that ruins the day

Going on a Friday and arriving at midday. The Grand Mosque closes to visitors between 11:30am and 2:30pm for prayers, and with a ninety-minute drive each way a late start means arriving exactly into that window. If Friday is the only day you have, aim for the 9:00am opening or plan around the 2:30pm reopening. During Ramadan the schedule changes again.
