What changes when you leave Dubai

Visitors treat the UAE as one place and it is not. Abu Dhabi is a separate emirate with its own transport authority, its own road toll, its own parking operator and its own taxi tariff. Everything you set up in Dubai stops at the border.

Four things that stop working

What applies in Dubai, and what replaces it in Abu Dhabi

SalikAED 4–6 per gateDoes not apply. The Abu Dhabi road toll is Darb, charged separately. What Salik costs in Dubai

RTA taxi tariffAED 5 street startA different regulator sets a different starting fare. Both, compared, with sources

The one that costs people money is Salik and Darb being separate systems on the same drive: a car going from Dubai to Abu Dhabi can be charged by both, under two accounts, and neither authority publishes what the combined journey costs. The transport options with their published fares covers the route itself in full.

What does carry over

Federal rules do not change at an emirate border. Your visa, the 5% VAT rate, the customs allowances you cleared at the airport and the medication rules all apply nationally.

What nobody publishes about the crossing

This is a Dubai site, and this page is here for the reader planning a day out from Dubai. Abu Dhabi is a different emirate with different authorities; where we have not checked an Abu Dhabi figure against its own source, we say which authority applies rather than quoting one. The whole section, and its limits.

Common questions

Does my nol card work in Abu Dhabi?

No. nol is Dubai's RTA card and covers the Dubai metro, tram and buses. Abu Dhabi's public transport is run by a different authority with its own card.

Do I pay Salik driving to Abu Dhabi?

You pay Salik for the Dubai gates you cross and Darb for the Abu Dhabi ones — two separate systems, two separate accounts. Neither authority publishes what the combined journey costs.

Is parking the same in Abu Dhabi as in Dubai?

No. Dubai's public parking is Parkin, with its own zones and two published fine schedules. Abu Dhabi uses Mawaqif, which has its own zones and its own fines.

Does my UAE visa cover Abu Dhabi?

Yes. Visas, VAT, customs allowances and medication rules are federal and apply across all seven emirates. What changes between emirates is transport, tolls, parking and taxi regulation.

Every figure and quotation on this page was checked against the source named below on 15 September 2026Sources: Dubai figures are quoted from RTA, Parkin and the Federal Tax Authority on the pages linked above, each carrying its own verification date. The Abu Dhabi comparisons are stated at the level of which authority applies, not as figures, because we have not yet verified Abu Dhabi tariffs against their own sources.Reviewed by Dan-Ionuț CiobanuCharged something different at the gate?
