One day in Dubai, ordered by what opens and closes when
One day is enough for the two halves of Dubai that matter most to a first visit: the old Creek in the morning and Downtown in the evening. The order is not a matter of taste. The heritage quarter opens at 07:00, the mall at 10:00, Burj Khalifa’s cheapest tier stops admitting at 19:00, and the fountain runs from 18:00 to 23:00. Put those four published times in a line and the day plans itself. The paid stops cost AED 190 per adult on the operators’ own cheapest tickets.
Morning — Al Fahidi, the abra and the souks
Start at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the restored wind-tower quarter on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek. Dubai Culture lists it open Monday to Sunday, 07:00 to 20:00, and states no entry charge; the Coffee Museum inside is free. This is the outdoor part of the day, which is the reason to do it first.
Cross to Deira by traditional abra: AED 1, cash only, and not payable with a nol card — the cheapest fare RTA publishes for anything. On the other bank the Gold Souk and Spice Souk are three minutes apart on foot. No authority sets trading hours for either. Visit Dubai describes most Gold Souk shops as open 10am to 10pm and says the Spice Souk is closed during the day on Fridays, so a Friday version of this day swaps the order: souks in the evening, Downtown first.
Midday — the Metro to Downtown
From the souks, Al Ras and Gold Souq stations on the Green Line are about five minutes’ walk. Change to the Red Line at BurJuman and ride to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. A single journey on a Silver nol card costs AED 3, 5 or 7.50 depending on the zones crossed (the full table). On a Sunday, the Metro does not open until 08:00 — RTA’s published station hours are 05:00 on every other day — which does not affect this plan but will affect an early airport run.
Afternoon — Dubai Mall and the aquarium
Dubai Mall opens at 10:00 and its shops close at 23:00 Monday to Thursday and midnight Friday to Sunday. If you add the aquarium, its cheapest ticket is the AED 199 Silver pass; the operator gives hours of 11:00–21:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00–21:00 at weekends, last entry 20:15. The Silver pass covers the Aquarium Tunnel, the Underwater Zoo and Penguin Cove.
Evening — Burj Khalifa, then the fountain
Book Burj Khalifa against last entry, not closing time. At the Top’s ticket site gives operational hours of 10:00–20:00, last entry 19:00 for Levels 124 & 125 (Silver, AED 189) and 18:00 for the higher tiers. Emaar’s own At the Top page says Silver starts from AED 199 “depending on date and time”; the two operator pages disagree, so budget from the higher figure if your slot is at sunset. A late-afternoon slot puts you back on the ground for the first fountain show: 18:00 to 23:00 at 30-minute intervals, and Emaar states it is free from the promenade. The Boardwalk, which brings you within nine metres of the jets, is AED 25.
Dinner runs late: Dubai Mall’s restaurants close at 00:00 Monday to Thursday and 01:00 Friday to Sunday, an hour after the shops. What each restaurant in the mall publishes.
What the day costs in tickets
| Stop | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Abra across the Creek | AED 1 | RTA, cash only |
| Burj Khalifa, Levels 124 & 125 | AED 189 | At the Top ticket site (Emaar’s page: from AED 199) |
| Dubai Fountain from the promenade | Free | Emaar, in those words |
| Aquarium (optional) | AED 199 | Operator ticket page |
AED 190 per adult without the aquarium and AED 389 with it, plus Metro fares. Those totals are our arithmetic; each figure in them is the operator’s own. Al Fahidi and the souks state no entry charge, which is not quite the same as stating that they are free. Every attraction price on this site, and everything under AED 100.
What can break a one-day plan
Friday: the Spice Souk is closed during the day, per Visit Dubai, so reverse the order. Last entry: Burj Khalifa’s higher tiers stop admitting at 18:00, two hours before the building closes. Seasons: if you were planning to swap in an outdoor attraction, several run on a published season — Global Village opens Season 31 on 14 October 2026 and Dubai Safari Park reopened on 12 October. What is closed right now is the page to check the week you travel.
