A Dubai layover, planned from what is actually published

Three published facts decide a layover. The Red Line serves Terminals 1 and 3, and its stations open at 05:00 (08:00 on Sunday); a taxi from the airport starts at AED 20 on RTA’s tariff and runs 24 hours; and the Metro allows two suitcases per passenger, no larger than 81 × 58 × 30 cm. Beyond that, what you can do depends on the hour you land, because the attractions publish their closing times and we list them below. Nothing here covers visas or how long immigration takes: neither is published as a time, and we do not guess.

First, the three things that are not published

How long immigration and security take — Dubai Airports publishes no queue times, so leave margin at both ends. A Metro journey time — RTA publishes no static time between any two stations, only a route planner; every “20 minutes to Downtown” you read is somebody’s estimate. The last train from the airport — RTA publishes station hours (to midnight most days, 01:00 on Friday) and states that last-train times “do not depend on the station opening hours”. The airport-to-city page sets all of this out.

Getting out and back

From DXB, as each authority publishes it
OptionPublished figureCatch
Metro, Red LineAED 3–7.50 on a Silver nol card, by zones crossed; no airport premium Terminals 1 and 3 only; stations open 05:00 (Sunday 08:00); two bags per person, 81 × 58 × 30 cm max
TaxiAED 20 start (AED 25 van) on RTA’s tariff; Dubai Taxi adds AED 2.45 per km Dubai Airports’ own page says AED 25 flat; ranks run 24 hours
From DWC (Al Maktoum)No Metro; buses F55 to Expo station and N55 to Ibn Battuta, every 30 minutes nol card required — no cash on buses

Terminal 2 has no Metro station: RTA’s connector guide routes it by bus to Abu Hail or Stadium. Whether a day pass beats single fares depends on how many trips you make.

Three plans by length

Six hours on the ground, daytime. Metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, the mall and the fountain’s 13:00 show, back the same way. No ticket needed; the aquarium (AED 199) fits if you want one. Keep the luggage rule in mind — a large check-in case is at the Metro’s published limit.

Eight hours, afternoon into evening. The same route, with Burj Khalifa booked against its 19:00 last entry and the first evening fountain show at 18:00. Taxi back rather than the Metro if your flight is after midnight: the last train is not published.

Twelve hours or a full day. Our one-day plan: Al Fahidi and the AED 1 abra in the morning, the souks, then Downtown. The paid stops come to AED 190 per adult on the operators’ cheapest tickets.

Overnight or early morning

Metro stations open at 05:00, and 08:00 on Sunday. Before that it is a taxi, and RTA’s published night start fare from the street is AED 5.50 (the airport start of AED 20 applies at the rank). What stays open after dark, by published closing time; Dubai Mall’s restaurants run to 00:00 Monday to Thursday and 01:00 Friday to Sunday.

Rules worth knowing for a few hours in the city

Dress codes are published by venues, not by one authority — what is written down. Photographing people without consent is the rule most visitors trip over; the published wording is here. Medication and customs rules apply even in transit: medication and customs allowances, each quoted from the authority.
